What Makes The Elephant Path Different?

By Sandra Dougherty, LMSW ·

Many traditional practices bill insurance and rely on office staff to manage your care. The Elephant Path takes a more direct approach.

  • Clear, upfront pricing. Before care begins, you and I will talk through the cost of services and create a care agreement together. You’ll receive a written Good Faith Estimate and have the chance to ask questions. Payment is due at the time of service for each appointment, so there are no surprise bills weeks later.
  • Greater privacy. Without insurance billing, your clinical information doesn’t need to be shared with an insurance company for claims or reviews. There are no front desk staff or billers handling your information, and your records are kept confidential in accordance with privacy laws.
  • A sliding fee scale. Your financial circumstances shouldn’t keep you from getting support. A sliding fee scale is available to make care accessible to more people.
  • Care built around you. You and I decide together on your treatment approach, how often we meet, and the cost of your care. These decisions are based on your needs and goals, and they can change as you do.
  • Flexible telehealth appointments. Join from home, from your office on a lunch break, or even from your parked car. Anywhere in Michigan with a private, quiet space works. No more canceled appointments due to weather!

How Do I Know If The Elephant Path Is Right for Me?

The Elephant Path may be a good fit if any of these sound familiar:

  • You don’t have insurance, or your plan doesn’t include a mental health benefit. Direct pay means you’ll know exactly what care costs without depending on coverage.
  • Your mental health services go toward a high deductible. If you rarely meet your deductible, or only meet it late in the year, you may be paying for most of your care yourself. A cash rate can often lower your cost of care over the year. The Elephant Path’s rates are based on averages within Michigan.
  • You value privacy. When you bill through insurance, your diagnosis, treatment plan, and session notes can be requested by your insurer. In a traditional clinic, your information may also be seen by billers, front desk staff, and office managers. Here, your clinical information stays between you and me, within the legal limits of confidentiality.
  • You want care decisions made between you and your therapist. With no third party involved, your care agreement is created and adjusted based on your individual needs.
  • You want to know the cost before you start. Insurance claims can take weeks to process, so a large, unexpected bill may arrive only after several sessions. At The Elephant Path, you’ll know your costs and payment expectations, in writing, before care begins.
